Fence installation in Toronto is won or lost at the post hole. A fence is a sail in the wind, and a post set 2 feet deep in dry-poured bagged concrete will lean by the third winter. We set every post at least 4 feet down, below the frost line, in wet-mixed concrete crowned to shed water, which is why our fences stay plumb long after the neighbours’ start to wander.
Toronto caps most backyard fences at 2 metres, and the rules shift on corner lots and front yards. We measure to the by-law, and on shared lines we’re comfortable being the contractor for two households at once, separate invoices, one straight fence.
Wind-thrown panels with sound posts can often be re-boarded; rotted posts mean the run is living on borrowed time and section replacement is the honest answer. We quote both when both are real options. Storm-damaged fences get priority scheduling, and a fence pairs well with a deck build while the auger is on site.
Pressure-treated privacy fence runs roughly $55 to $85 per linear foot installed; cedar $80 to $120. A typical 60-foot backyard run lands between $3,500 and $7,000 including gates. Shared property-line fences are often split with the neighbour.
Toronto's fence by-law caps most residential backyard fences at 2 metres (about 6'6") and front yard fences lower. We build to the by-law and handle the measurements, including the grade questions that come up on sloped lots.
Ontario's Line Fences Act provides a process, but in practice most neighbours just agree to split a shared line fence. We quote it both ways and can provide separate invoices for each household. It comes up constantly and it is no trouble.
Shallow posts and bagged concrete poured dry. We set posts a minimum 4 feet deep (below frost) in properly mixed concrete, crowned to shed water away from the wood. Ours are still straight when the stain needs its second coat.
