Services › Front Steps & Porch Repair
Front steps repair in Toronto is mostly a story about salt. Decades of de-icer and freeze-thaw turn poured concrete steps into the flaking, rusted-rebar entrances you see on every block of postwar housing, and the front steps are the first thing every guest, appraiser, and buyer touches. We rebuild them, or recap sound ones in natural stone that salt can’t eat.
Tap test, crack map, a look underneath: if the core is sound, a stone recap gets you a better-than-new entrance for a third of rebuild money. If the steps are hollow, through-cracked, or sinking, capping them is burying money, we say so and quote the rebuild. You get both numbers when both are legitimate.
Steps rarely travel alone. Pairing the steps with a matching interlock walkway or small front garden wall is where the street-view transformation happens, and bundling them into one mobilization is meaningfully cheaper than three separate jobs.
Surface spalling on structurally sound steps can be recapped in natural stone or porcelain, a fraction of replacement cost and a big upgrade in looks. Steps that are cracked through, hollow underneath, or pulling away from the porch need rebuilding. The free assessment tells you which you have.
Stone recapping of existing steps typically runs $2,500 to $6,000. Full rebuilds in block and stone run $5,000 to $15,000 depending on height and width. Matching walkway work is usually quoted in the same visit since the savings of doing both at once are real.
Recaps are usually 2 to 3 days. Full rebuilds run 4 to 7 days including curing time before the railing goes back on. We keep a safe temporary path to your door throughout.
Salt and freeze-thaw damage is wear, not an insurable event, but it is preventable: stone and porcelain caps shrug off salt that destroys poured concrete. If your steps are spalling, recapping before the rebar rusts is the cheap version of this repair.
